Organizing Digital Kits

I came up with a system that took a few hours, for three evenings, and I can find any kit easily. My files are in a scrapbook folder on an external drive divided into Kits, Embellishments, Brushes, Actions, Layouts, etc.

Making a Kit Inventory

1. All Kits are stored in Scrapbooking>00Kits folder.
2. Inside my Kits file I made a file titled 00Kit Inventory (the 00 makes it move to the top of the list)
3. I browsed my kits one at time and found the preview jpg or gif (package image showing all the papers, embellys, etc)
4. I made a copy of each preview image and saved each to the 00Kit Inventory.
5. Many kits did not contain a preview image. So I used the TOU for that kit to find the author and scrapbook store to go and get a preview image to save into 00Kit Inventory.
6. As I did this I renamed each image to the actual kit name (the details are still in the actual kit folder).
7. Using Thumbs Plus 7 (which I like much more than the Scrap Room or Pisasa) I assign color or theme keywords to the kit image.
6. I also have a 00Layouts folder where I keep only layout used with kits I have purchased.

Now I can find a kit by color, designer, or theme quickly! …without haying to open each kit folder.

I have a ways to go-- I don't have the kit previews from CDs or kits in my Zip2b processed folder but its a start. I’m considering placing 6 preview on a page, printing and saving in a notebook.

When I purchase a new kit I save the preview image and add to my inventory list. I'm going to do the same thing for my wish list folder (I have a folder packed with previews of kits I want to get one day (trying to tone down impulse buying).

I’ve started working on my embellishments. Right now I have several into proper folders (buttons, bows, ribbons, fasteners, etc). I need to add key wording to individual elements eventually. I'm starting to place preview images of packaged embellishments into a folder call Embel Inventory as listed above.

I use ABRViewer for my brushes.
